How to submit a message

To submit a message, e-mail it to south_shore_events@yahoogroups.ca. It has to be approved by the moderator before it gets sent to the members of the group.

Format of messages

Please put all the information in the body of the e-mail, not in an attachment. Reasons for this:

  1. Some people view their e-mail as text only, for various reasons.
  2. Some people may not KNOW how to open an attachment, or won't bother, as it's an extra step.
  3. Some people may not have the appropriate software to open the attachment.
  4. Some people will not open attachments at all for fear of downloading a virus.
  5. Some file types, Word docs for example, may generate warnings that they may contain viruses before they open. Those warnings will scare many people off opening them.
  6. Keeping the list as low-tech as possible ensures maximum reach for your messages.
  7. Some of our members are on dial-up, and a big file can really slow them down.

Name the event and the date in the subject line.

Please DO NOT start the message with "Hi, can you forward this to the group?" The message will be forwarded exactly as you write it.

Including Images

You may insert JPG or GIF images into the body of the email, as opposed to attaching them. If you have a nice poster, for example, this might be a good way to do it. If so, please adhere to the following guidelines:

If you must send an attachment of a document, make a PDF rather than sending a DOC. There are online tools you can use for this purpose if you don't have the software. But even PDFs can contain viruses, so don't expect people to open it. Put your information in the body of the message. A PDF cannot be inserted into the body of the message like a JPG can.

Content of messages

The mailing list is intended to publicize events only, such as music, dance, theatre, art openings, workshops etc. and community events of a more general nature. It is not a "buy and sell" nor is it for discussion of issues, nor for party politics. (Such e-mails will not be forwarded to the group.) (The one exception a moderator might choose to make is when someone is urgently looking for accommodation or has a house to rent; this situation can be a serious "event" when word of mouth can make a big difference in someone's life.)

Please keep in mind that we all want people to WANT to be on this list, trusting that it will not inundate them with excessive undesired messages.

Geographic area - Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Bridgewater and places that people from that area there might drive to attend, say Chester to Cherry Hill. Lunenburg County, basically. Not Halifax or the Valley unless it's something exceptional.
