Heather Holm
Heather's
early musical experience growing up in Nova Scotia included
piano lessons, singing with family and in choirs, and learning
to play various instruments, including her father's accordion,
which was too big for her at the time.
Years later, Heather took the accordion
to Montreal, where she lived for most of the 1980s. From
time to time, she busked with the accordion in the subway,
and conquered her fear of playing in front of people.
In those days, Heather was a member of
the Yellow Door Tabernacle Choir, whose repetoire covered many
centuries and the entire world. She was also introduced to Celtic
music. She unlearned some of her classical training and learned
to play by ear and to improvise.
When Heather returned to Nova Scotia
in 1989, the accordion led her to new collaborations. She played
and sang in a Celtic group Calliope with fiddler/singer/mandolinist
Dennis Robinson and Valerie Goldin on Irish flute and concertina.
Heather and Dennis continued to play for years as the duo Salt
and Heather, performing Celtic music and sea shanteys. She
was also a founding member of Ensemble à part with François
Coté, Mike MacKay, Mike Charleton, and Ken
Shorley, performing traditional and medieval French songs.
Heather has degrees in Chemistry and Sociology, and runs
her own web design business, HolmPage.com.
She now lives near Mahone Bay with son Malcolm, his father
Steve (Etienne) Sepulchre, and his Holm grandfather.
