Etienne (Steve) Sepulchre

Sometimes I collaborate with my husband, Etienne (Steve) Sepulchre, our in-house expert in the French language. His love of the French language was nurtured by a classical education in his native Belgium. With a Canadian law degree (Common Law) followed by postgraduate studies in legislation, and a lifetime interest in aviation, he has specialized in legal drafting, editing and writing, particularly regarding civil aviation and regulations, as well as in legal translation. He is a highly skilled writer and translator, and has worked as a part-time university professor and a school board trustee. On his website, RegulatoryAid.ca, you can see a more detailed resumé and information on his regulatory aid services. He also maintains a blog on civil aviation, one on sailing in English, and another in French, Voile pour tous. We live near Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. Check out the Nova Scotia Photo Album to find out why we live where we do.]]>

Web design for small businesses and organizations http://www.holmpage.com/blog/ Wed, 02 Mar 2011 13:56:56 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?page_id=158 really good web site that works for you, and by remaining available for friendly ongoing maintenance and advice as you need it.

What is a good website?

A good web site needs to communicate your business effectively. You'll spend less time repeating yourself on the phone and more time being productive. A good web site also needs to get across your "marketing message" - a compelling, concise statement of why people should give you their business. A good web site needs to be user-friendly: fast to download, easy to navigate, enjoyable and accessible so that your visitors have a good experience and stick around long enough to get interested. A good web site needs to reach people. It must be designed to rank well with the search engines so that people nearby and around the world who are looking for your product or service can find you. I see our working relationship as a partnership, pooling our knowledge and expertise to reach these goals and others you have for your small business. I am available for new website design and website redesign. After the site is launched under your own domain, I remain available for prompt and affordable website updates and maintenance. Or I can help set you up to make your own updates.

Where do I start?

Fill out my web design questionnaire or e-mail me directly at heather@holmpage.com and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I'm currently located on Nova Scotia's South Shore, and have lived in the Annapolis Valley, Halifax, Montreal and Africa, and serve the world.]]>

• Keep people and search engines coming back with regular updates.
• Showcase the quality of your work with great photos, well presented.
• Spend less time on the phone and more time in the shop or yard — or with the kids or in a canoe - by letting the information on your website do the talking. When people finally contact you, they will be better informed.
• Timber Frame and Log Home Builder Websites

Heartwood Log HomesArlington Frame CompanyTimber Frame House Plans Ltd. I've worked with Heartwood Log Homes and Arlington Frame Company since the late 1990s, and the websites now drive their businesses. Their sites have been redesigned and updated often over the years. Both companies are located in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. Arlington Frame Company has spawned Timberframe Houseplans Ltd., which sells timber frame house plans online and feeds the construction side of the business as well. David Yasenchack Timber Framing and Design in OhioWise Owl JoineryTimberhart Woodworks David Yasenchack is an artisan timberframer in Ohio who works with the beautiful species of trees growing on his Pennsylvania land to build unique and personal timber frames. Wise Owl Joinery Co. is another artisan builder in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley. He has found a niche doing smaller projects with the supply of seasoned timbers he keeps on hand. TimberhArt Woodworks evolved out of the first timber frame revival company in Nova Scotia, and I built their first website back in 1998 or so. More recently I've redesigned it, incorporating disparate elements introduced by others along the way. Cocks & Delaney Construction and DesignCocks & Delaney are general contractors and master carpenters and cabinetmakers from Mahone Bay who build new homes, do historic restoration and home renovation projects, and cabinetry. While search engines bring in some traffic directly, visitors to vacation home sites often arrive via provincial or state tourism publications or websites, and by online listing agencies such as CyberRentals, Cottage Link, VRBO and others. These sites may show a few photos of your property, but if you have your own website you can have a lot more photos, convey a feeling about the place and describe the area on your own terms. HomeAwayConnect.com provides an availability calendar and a guestbook that site owners can link to and maintain themselves, and a very informative newsletter that is worth reading if you're in the holiday rental business. By walking to school with her friends, her daughter will develop a sense of belonging to that particular place and community - something that we don't feel so deeply when we drive everywhere. The mother will work with the local school to help develop the activities she wants available for her child. She expects that by the time her daughter reaches high school, the expense of busing kids to the big high school in another town 30 km distant will have led to the revitalization of the local high school. With another friend I talked about gardening - how it is the perfect antidote to working on a computer. We shared our questions about how much time, money and energy to put into our gardens. How long will we be living in our current homes? Should we be planting apple trees and asparagus which take years to come to fruition? Should we truck in manure to build up the soil so we can raise more of our own food? What if sea levels rise faster than expected - are we too close to sea level? Another friend is involved in creating a new organization. Some people from Halifax, an hour's drive away, interested in what they are doing. Should they spend the resources to drive to Halifax to engage people there and expand their numbers? Or keep it local? She feels that organizing locally is where the group should be putting its energy, given the increased cost of travel. Other people were discussing how they are moving towards eating more locally - the "hundred mile diet" - or is it 100 kilometers? I said that I want to include in my "local" diet the delicious greenhouse tomatoes grown in Amherst, which may be 100 miles as the crow flies. Someone pointed out that the people who recently publicized the idea of "hundred mile diet" live in a warmer climate where more foodstuffs can be grown more easily. We have to travel a little further for variety. The importance of maintaining and building the local farmers' markets was mentioned. We are going to need those local distribution mechanisms. Even if we all find ourselves driving less and engaging ourselves locally more, as our great-grandparents did, one thing is different: thanks to the internet we are connected more than ever. I can't but think that online shopping will remain popular as people choose not to travel by car just to shop. Product delivery is done much more efficiently by post office or courier than by shopping mall parking lots full of consumers' vehicles. Already, online research, education, entertainment and banking have become routine. We will find more and more ways to use the internet.]]> 4 2008-05-25 12:30:24 2008-05-25 16:30:24 open open thinking-locally-acting-locally-connecting-globally publish 0 0 post 0 _edit_last website drives business http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=5 Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=5 5 2010-03-05 15:10:05 0000-00-00 00:00:00 open open draft 0 0 post 0 _edit_last Updating this web designer's monitor http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2008/11/updating-this-web-designers-monitor/ Sun, 23 Nov 2008 02:51:45 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=9 I remember a bit of trouble getting it to display at its native resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels, but eventually it did. And my eyes were much happier. My husband just got a new LCD monitor and used the DVI cable that came with it. He was amazed at the clarity of the image, claiming that it was even better than mine, which he has long admired. He thought my monitor would give a better picture if I conneced the DVI cable which had come with the monitor. So I tried it. But no longer would it display at 1680 x 1050. The closest it would do (Control Panel > Display > Settings) was 1600 x 900. "Your drivers are so out of date," said my husband. So I searched for new drivers for the monitor using Windows (XP) and also at the Dell website, but there were none to be found. But it was the display adapter (video card) that needed a new driver. Finally my husband took over and found one at NVIDIA, the maker of the card. Once installed, it gave me a whole new range of choices for screen resolution, including the one I needed. Readers should know that LCD monitors have a native resolution, and are best used at that resolution. Now my display is crystal clear and I'm a bit wiser.]]> 9 2008-11-22 22:51:45 2008-11-23 02:51:45 open open updating-this-web-designers-monitor publish 0 0 post 0 _edit_last Wolfville House Vacation Rental gets facelift http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=10 Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=10 10 2009-02-09 17:37:07 0000-00-00 00:00:00 open open draft 0 0 post 0 _edit_last affiliate sources- do not publish http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/08/affiliate-sources/ Wed, 25 Aug 2010 21:51:17 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=11

Look what happened after I installed a WordPress blog on the site in November 2008. The graph below shows traffic to the site from Google, according to Google Analytics. [caption id="attachment_16" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Google traffic after adding a blog to the site"]Google traffic after adding a blog[/caption] The blue line is traffic to the site from July 6, 2008 to June 20, 2009. The orange line is for the same period a year before, 2007-2008. Note that this isn't the traffic to my blog, it's the traffic to the site itself, just from Google. You can see that traffic started going up around Christmastime and kept rising. The curious thing is that traffic to the blog itself does not account for the difference! Here's the traffic to the blog homepage (the only page with significant traffic) for the same period: [caption id="attachment_17" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Traffic from all sources to the blog homepage"]Traffic to the blog itself - no more than 90 visitors in a week[/caption] In this period, no more than 90 visitors saw the blog homepage in any week, yet Google alone was sending 200 extra visitors a week to the site - people who wouldn't have shown up if previous trends had continued. Other sources of traffic did not change significantly over that time period. Furthermore, it seems that the traffic was coming for a wide variety of long tail keywords as I was blogging about them. Conclusion: the mere existence of a WordPress blog on a website, if you're updating it regularly (I have averaged twice a week) can increase your site's status with Google. The rest of my site got more traffic just because a blog was there, even if people weren't visiting the blog.]]> 14 2010-02-05 18:11:02 2010-02-05 22:11:02 open open the-impact-of-having-a-blog-on-your-sites-traffic publish 0 0 post 0 _edit_last can i update my own website http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=23 Wed, 05 May 2010 17:56:10 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=23 23 2010-05-05 13:56:10 2010-05-05 17:56:10 open open draft 0 0 post 0 _edit_last Renovation to Timberframe Houseplans website http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/02/renovation-to-timberframe-houseplans-website/ Wed, 24 Feb 2010 17:21:33 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=25 Lighthouse style house from Timberframe House Plans[/caption]This site, Timberframe Houseplans Ltd. is several years old. I built it myself, but times have changed (of course) and I'm giving it an overhaul. The owner often goes through the site on the phone with his potential clients, and is able to give excellent feedback. I wish all my clients had such useful information. He knows what is hard for them to find on the site, what they like, how much or little they notice, and much more. Visitors with screen resolution of 800x600 pixels, the smallest resolution commonly in use, is now just 2% for this site, down by half from this time last year. So it's time to widen the display to the next level, 995 pixels, to accommodate the next widest common resolution of 1024x768. (The difference between 1024 and 995 is necessary to accommodate the scrollbar.) Yippee! This makes a web designer's heart glad. It has been many years since we were able to move up from 580 pixels wide (for 640x480) to 770 pixels or so (for 800x600), when the 640x480 resolution dwindled to insignificance. More real estate. Based on my client's feedback, I've added a new multi-level menu to the site, which allows users to see a picture and some information about a houseplan before going to the plan's page. The new menu eliminates the need for a page listing all the plans, which made finding your way through the site a bit confusing. The new multi-level menu puts all the site's navigation "above the fold", where it's easier to find without scrolling, and shortens the number of menu items in a row that the user has to find their way through. It has been found that more than 7 items in a row, in the same format on a menu, make many people's heads swim - they have trouble finding what they might be looking for. I'm not underestimating people's intelligence, but I'm learning not to overestimate the prevalence of dyslexia, Irlen's Syndrome, and other causes of reading difficulty. My client has another site, Arlington Frame Company, which builds timberframes, and people easily get confused by the relationship between the two sites. So we plan to make that clearer as we redesign them. For now, a new big button in the header leads people to the Arlington site. I welcome your feedback as I work through this project with the goal of increasing sales of timber frame house plans for my client.]]> 25 2010-02-24 13:21:33 2010-02-24 17:21:33 open open renovation-to-timberframe-houseplans-website publish 0 0 post 0 _edit_last 3 http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/05/client-age-designing-website/ 10.8.8.20 2010-05-05 09:35:36 2010-05-05 13:35:36 1 pingback 0 0 Another fireworks web redesign http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/03/another-fireworks-web-redesign/ Wed, 03 Mar 2010 00:53:51 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=27 ISF logo[/caption] The International Symposium on Fireworks is held once every year or two. Fred Wade, of Nova Scotia's Fireworks FX Inc., and a leading "light" in pyrotechnics, organizes the event and asked for a redesign of the Symposium's website. I don't often work on a black background because it's a bit harder to read, but for a fireworks theme it makes total sense. Choosing the colour scheme was fun. For readability, I like the gold text - I find it easy on the eyes. Colour-coding the menu helps people find what they're looking for. For the slideshows of past Symposia, I used a PHP script by Greg Lawler that I've employed in a number of other sites, including the Nova Scotia Photo Album, except that this time there were so many photos in each slideshow (up to 240) that the thumbnails (1) needed to appear, so that people could find the pictures they wanted to see, but (2) needed to NOT be on the same page as the slideshow, or they would slow it down too much. I'm not a PHP programmer, but I figured it out, and am pleased with the results (and with myself!). The thumbnails appear on a second page, and when you click on one, it links you back to the first page with the slideshow. See these Mexican fireworks for an example. Oh, and if you ever go to Mexico, take in some fireworks if you can.]]> 27 2010-03-02 20:53:51 2010-03-03 00:53:51 open open another-fireworks-web-redesign publish 0 0 post 0 _edit_last Accommodation providers: Do you link out to TripAdvisor from your website? http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/03/accommodation-providers-do-you-link-out-to-tripadvisor-from-your-website/ Sun, 21 Mar 2010 01:38:22 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=47 [/caption] A client of mine recently listed her Bed & Breakfast on TripAdvisor.com and was given a snippet of code to put on her website which, when clicked, takes you to her listing on the Trip Advisor site. She was wondering whether she wanted it on her site. Meanwhile, I was doing research for a trip of my own, and relying heavily on Trip Advisor to select a hotel. I will choose the hotel based on the Trip Advisor comments as much as on the facilities advertised by the hotel. Trip Advisor has become a big player in the travel accommodations game, and favorable comments are important. So should my client link to it from her website? Pros:
• The snippet gives past B&B patrons an easy link to her listing on Trip Advisor so they can leave a comment. Presumably these would be people who are going over their memories of the trip and are revisiting websites of places they stayed and things they saw.
• If they don't already know about or use Trip Advisor, this may be their introduction to it, and she would get some comments she wouldn't have otherwise received.
• The snippet gives potential customers an easy link to see comments made by others, which is an advantage if the comments are good.
• Testimonials on your own site serve the same purpose. But comments left on a third-party site have added credibility because the B&B owner does not control them.
Cons:
• The snippet encourages potential customers to leave her website. Once on Trip Advisor, they are encouraged to compare her B&B with others, and may well choose to stay in a different establishment.
• People who are already using Trip Advisor will look there for comments about your establishment anyway, snippet or not.
• People who don't know about, or aren't using, Trip Advisor, will find out about it. This could be good or bad, depending on your comments.
Suggestions:
• Whether the B&B owner puts the snippet on her site or not, she should encourage guests, as they leave, to leave a comment on Trip Advisor, perhaps even giving them a card with the web address, or letting them use the house computer.
• Your website itself should have real testimonials, with names for credibility. Keep a guestbook. If you're good at what you do, you'll get lots of lovely comments. Be sure to ask permission to use them. Ask whether you can use the guest's name, or at least something like "Ann K., Maryland".
What do you think my client should do? What would you do?]]>

Consider the age of your clients when designing a website http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/05/client-age-designing-website/ Wed, 05 May 2010 13:35:30 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=52 Timber frame blending into shingled house[/caption] One of my oldest web sites is for Arlington Frame Company of Canning, NS. It has been a pleasure, and very encouraging through the years, to have provided an essential component of this business's operations. We have learned and grown together. The website drives the business. It's not an e-commerce site - it can't be, because the product is not something you can pop in a shopping cart and sell online. We're talking houses. Dream homes, usually, or retirement homes, which clients research and plan for years before buying. Since the decline of dial-up modems, Forrest Rand, the owner, frequently finds himself on the phone with prospective clients on the phone, pointing out features and examples on the website. So he knows what works and what's awkward, what is hard for clients to find on the page and what appeals to them. This kind of usability feedback is a web designer's dream. [caption id="attachment_55" align="alignright" width="350" caption="The multi-level menu has a picture of each timber frame in the portfolio. Click on image above to go to old gallery page, now reinstated."]Arlington multi-level menu with pictures[/caption] Having recently redesigned Arlington's sister web site, Timberframe Houseplans Ltd., I used the same menu structure for the new Arlington design. However, Forrest found that the new structure confuses people who were used to the old "gallery" format. So I've had to reinstate the old gallery page for the long-term lurkers, while offering the new menu for the newcomers. In time, hopefully, there will be fewer complaints, but the prospects who have been hanging around for a while are the ones who will bring in the business for the next couple of years, so we can't afford to alienate them! Those of us who spend a lot of time on the internet and are accustomed to constant change easily underestimate how confusing it can be to others. When you have learned to find your way around a website, it can be very confusing and frustrating if things change on you. The older you are, the more this is the case. And people building custom houses are older, on average, than people building websites! It's something we see on Facebook all the time; whenever Facebook institutes a design or functional change, some people complain long and loud. Facebook is very personal in nature, and is therefore highly vulnerable to such dissatisfaction. I think Google manages its perennially-increasing functionality well, maintaining the same simple, straightforward design while adding simple links that open up new vistas of possibility for the rest of us. ]]> 52 2010-05-05 09:35:30 2010-05-05 13:35:30 open open client-age-designing-website publish 0 0 post 0 _edit_last Renew your valuable domains for several years at a time, if you're serious http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=91 Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=91 91 2010-08-07 11:36:27 0000-00-00 00:00:00 open open draft 0 0 post 0 _edit_last Multilingual website for Barefoot Acupuncturists http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=119 Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=119 119 2010-10-30 21:01:09 0000-00-00 00:00:00 open open draft 0 0 post 0 _edit_last copyright http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=132 Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=132 132 2011-02-18 23:21:28 0000-00-00 00:00:00 open open draft 0 0 post 0 _edit_last Vacation rental websites business http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=135 Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=135 is an ideal retreat space for a writer, an artist or someone on sabbatical. • A Facebook status update is quicker than a blog, and you don't have a 140-character limit as in Twitter.
• It's easy to add photos and videos to Facebook.
• Facebook has broken the technology barrier for a huge percentage of the population. You probably already know how to do Facebook.
• If you don't know Facebook yet, you'll find that it's as intuitive as any online medium can be, and the psychological rewards for learning it are immediate.
• Other people know Facebook too, and they're more likely to interact with you on your Facebook Page than on a blog.
• You may already have a bunch of friends on Facebook who know what you do and will "Like" your page (the new equivalent of becoming a fan).
• Add a link to a webpage in your Facebook status update, and it instantly gives you the opportunity to choose a picture from that page. This is cool and fun.
• You can check in on your Facebook friends while you're pretending to work! ;-)
• You can check in on your Facebook business page while you're interacting with your friends, and feel virtuous (if not virtual)!
• People who are not Facebook members can still see your Facebook page - it is public - although they can't leave comments.
And now there's another reason to have a Facebook Page for your business. You can easily put a "Like Box" with either a news feed of your Facebook page updates, a set of random mini profile pictures of your "fans", or both, on your own website. I've just set up a Like Box for Whitman Wharf House Bed and Breakfast in Canso, NS. I'm very pleased with how it looks over a semi-transparent background. I've also added one to the homepage of Fireworks FX Inc. [caption id="attachment_65" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Screenshot showing Like Box on the Nova Scotia Photo Album site, with "fans"."]Website page[/caption] Inspired, I just set up a Facebook page for my own Nova Scotia Photo Album, and added a Like Box to the site. Perhaps I'll add a WordPress plugin that copies my blog posts to my Facebook page. Then everyone who "likes" my page will see my updates in their Facebook News Feed. These updates are easily shared. The viral power of Facebook is not to be underestimated. Click here for the instructions and wizard for adding a Facebook Like Box to your website. You can customize a few parameters: width, whether to show the feed, and how many fans to show, if any. Background colour is transparent by default, and can easily be set by css on your page or an external stylesheet. Changing text colour is more complicated, however. There are other cool tools that Facebook has made available and I'll write about them as I gain experience with them. There are disadvantages, however, to essentially having Facebook host your blog, rather than having a full-fledged WordPress blog on your website under your domain.
• You will probably be sending some people away from your site into a yummy, addictive, warm and fuzzy place where they are likely to get lost for the next hour, and forget to come back to your website.
• You are missing out on the built-in search-engine-magnetic powers of WordPress.
• You are not adding content and value to your own site.
• Non-Facebook members cannot comment on your postings.
So it's a tradeoff, and it's up to each person to decide what works for them. However, if it's a difference between getting it done on Facebook and not getting it done on a blog, go for the path of least resistance. Just don't get lost!]]>

Flashiest isn’t always best. Keep it simple. http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/06/flashiest-isnt-always-best-keep-it-simple/ Wed, 30 Jun 2010 02:32:03 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=73 Contract Furnishings homepage[/caption] I've finished redesigning a pair of websites for Valley Stationers Ltd, and its furniture division, Contract Furnishings. Valley Stationers is a well-established, family-owned business operating since 1962. The previous versions of the websites made extensive use of Flash and JavaScript. Some of their biggest customers, who operate behind a security wall that bans JavaScript, could not use the site or see any the links. And neither site was getting much traffic. Search engine robots cannot navigate JavaScript links either. It is easy to forget that many people working in institutional environments do not have the latest in computer equipment. Some are stuck with older operating systems, obsolete browsers, and high levels of security. Reasons may include:
• organizational dependence on an intranet that was built to work with older software and hardware;
• the cost of upgrading a large network all at once;
• internet security concerns because of sensitive data on the network;
• to keep employees off Facebook;
• "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude - even when it isn't working well for some employees.
Fortunately, cool graphics and interactivity are not exclusive to Flash and JavaScript. HTML and CSS can provide interactivity and wow factor with faster download times, and better accessibility to search engines, to the visually impaired and others. What is your experience? Have you worked in an environment with old computer equipment and systems? What factors prevented management from upgrading?]]>

Register your domain and host your website with two different companies. http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/07/register-your-domain-and-host-your-website-with-two-different-companies/ Fri, 09 Jul 2010 17:34:21 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=78 [/caption] In the Frequently Given Advice department: Suppose you register your domain with one company and host your site with the same business. What happens if the company disappears? Even the big ones can fail. It actually happened with one of the larger registrars a few years ago, leaving many people and businesses severely inconvenienced. Their websites had disappeared, and they could not access the registrar to point their domain to another company. Some hosting companies offer a free domain with their package. If you're new to setting up a website, it may seem an attractive option. But for just $10/year (the approximate cost of owning a domain name), it makes more sense to have total control over your domain. After all, it will quickly become an essential asset of your business, carrying with it search engine visibility ("Google juice"), valuable inbound links from other websites, brand awareness and just plain old business goodwill. If your domain registrar goes down but your website is still standing because it is hosted with a different company, you have time to transfer registration to another registrar. Likewise, If your web host goes down but you can still access your registration, you can find a new web host and point the domain to the new server. Best practice: register your domain with one company and host your site with another.]]> 78 2010-07-09 13:34:21 2010-07-09 17:34:21 open open register-your-domain-and-host-your-website-with-two-different-companies publish 0 0 post 0 _edit_last What fonts can I use on my website or WordPress blog? http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/08/what-fonts-can-i-use-on-my-website-or-wordpress-blog/ Wed, 25 Aug 2010 21:45:11 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=94 Another in the Frequently Given Advice department: The fonts that people see on a website (or blog) - or in an e-mail, for that matter, are the ones they have on their computer. It matters not which ones you have on yours. "Browser-safe" fonts are very few in number, as they comprise those fonts that almost every computer has installed. They are declared in font-families such as "Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" or "Times New Roman, Times, serif" so that PC and Mac users will see approximately the same thing. Here is a list of the "browser-safe" font families that can be used. Websites and blogs are usually designed with stylesheets that declare the fonts to be used. Changing a font in the stylesheet creates an overall change on your whole site. To change the font of an individual selection of text on a page, you can create a "class" in the stylesheet or in the head section of the page to declare the new font, then tag the special text in order to tell the stylesheet where to apply the special font. You can also add a style "inline" in the HTML directly, but this is tedious. Styles are applied according to the rules of CSS (cascading style sheets). If you aren't ready to make a study of CSS, stick to the styles given in your stylesheet. It's considered poor design to have a lot of fonts on a page anyway, without some special reason. Usually, there is one font for headers, and maybe a different one for paragraphs. You can use the variations of bold, italic and colour to achieve variety, even in WordPress. In WordPress, when writing a post or page in Visual mode, you can easily tag your headings. To do this, click on the "Kitchen Sink"button (it looks like this: Kitchen Sink button in WordPress ), then select from the Format drop-down list on the second line that appears. The format you select will affect a whole paragraph, making it either "paragraph" or Heading1, Heading2 etc. A "Preformatted" font is also available (see which is a typewriter-like monospaced font like Courier, and is usually used to quote computer code. You have to put in the line breaks yourself or it will just extend on forever. You can experiment with those. They are defined in the stylesheet. I've seen blogs get pretty messy-looking when people try to cut and paste from Word, for example, unintentionally carrying the formatting along with the text. It can be a mess to clean up. But now WordPress has buttons that allow you to "Paste as Plain Text" or "Paste from "Word" that will strip the formatting from the text on your clipboard. They look like this: Paste as Plain Text, Paste from Word. Please use one of them if you are copying from Word, from another website or from any application where the text may be formatted already. It is possible to embed a font force your readers to download a font that you want to use on a webpage, but I don't do it because:
1. It doesn't work with all browsers,
2. It increases download time,
3. There can be copyright issues.
Fancy fonts can also be used by creating an image file of the text. This practice is regularly seen in headers and logos. The disadvantages of taking this approach with page text and headlines are:
1. Pages download more slowly because image files take longer to download than text, and
2. Search engines can't read and index the text in an image file.
Search engines give extra weight to the text inside a heading tag. So you lose a lot of "google-juice" if you put your headers in image tags. That technique is best left for page header, logo etc. WordPress won't allow you do it anyway - it requires a text headline, or will create one for you. Save your unusual fonts for designing posters and things that you can print directly, or for your logo or header image.]]>

Not that anyone is ignoring the challenges facing a small province and an economy traditionally dependent on a resource base that has been dwindling noticeably for decades. Rather, the initiative aims to bring together the positive elements of life and work in Nova Scotia, those factors that bring new residents and visitors here, that keep most Nova Scotians in the province, and that make many others want to come back. This is the Old World of Canada. Nova Scotia has given the country more than its share of movers and shakers in politics, the arts, science and industry. Nova Scotia educates more than its share of university students, boasts an enviable quality of life and offers an unrivaled sense of place borne on rich heritage and natural beauty. These are some of the ingredients that make people want to be here. To keep them here, Nova Scotia needs to be perceived as a great place to work and do business; where people who are passionate about living here are creatively building our new economy. It's not surprising that many of last week's Charter signers are involved in marketing: people who understand that perception and reality are two sides of the same coin. Like me, I'm sure the others feel encouraged by being part of a larger initiative to promote the advantages of living, working, vacationing, studying, and doing business in Nova Scotia.]]> 112 2010-09-28 12:35:07 2010-09-28 16:35:07 open open nova-scotia-come-to-life publish 0 0 post 0 _edit_last _wp_old_slug Spam and E-mail encoding http://www.holmpage.com/blog/2010/11/spam-email-encoding/ Mon, 15 Nov 2010 20:12:27 +0000 admin http://www.holmpage.com/blog/?p=121 [/caption] Any time you publish your e-mail address online, you risk getting spam as a result. But don't despair! You can still be contacted by e-mail from your website and not be deluged by spam. Several levels of protection from e-mail spam are available to you. When putting an e-mail address on a website, I encode it using the best system I know, Dan Benjamin's Hivelogic Enkoder, which is based on JavaScript. There is still nothing that can be done to stop someone from manually copying your e-mail address as presented on the screen, but the encoding prevents it from being seen by the evil bots. There is even a WordPress plugin for the Hivelogic Enkoder (if your website or blog is built on WordPress) that automatically converts any e-mail address to encoded JavaScript. (It doesn't seem to work for e-mail addresses contained in widgets, however. Recently I had to insert the encoded script manually into an HTML box widget.) The only real disadvantage of this system is that JavaScript must be enabled in the browser for the address to be seen. It is rare that people browse with JavaScript turned off, but some high-security workplace firewalls may block JavaScript. There is a less encrypted way to encode e-mails which replaces each letter with its numbered character entity, e.g. the letter "a" becomes "a". The browser will render these normally, and JavaScript is not an obstacle. This is a method to consider if a lot of your site visitors are sitting behind firewalls in government or military establishments where security is high. But I'm sure it is somewhat less secure for you and your inbox. If the e-mail address you display is being forwarded to the e-mail address you get from your ISP (e.g. Sympatico, Eastlink, Aliant, Rogers) or to a Hotmail, Yahoo or Gmail account, it will pass through filters set up by your provider. If you're lucky, most of the spam heading your way will get caught. I've heard tales of sudden volumes of spam from people who had just switched providers, which tells me that some providers have more effective filters than others (particularly when switching from Sympatico to Eastlink in Nova Scotia. Please leave a comment if you have experience in this. Hopefully spam filtering will improve for everyone as a result). If the e-mail address you display is on your domain name and is not being forwarded but rather you access it directly with an e-mail client on your computer or online, you may have spam filters available through your hosting provider. It depends on what they offer. So log in and check your hosting account to see if you can improve your spam filters. [caption id="attachment_124" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Guess which filter keywords this spammer was trying to avoid?"][/caption] Spammers often design email to slip through filters, for example by inserting blanks or periods in the middle of words that typically trigger filters. There is a constant cat and mouse game between the spammers and the filter designers. I have been using the Hivelogic Enkoder to encode my e-mail address which is forwarded to a Sympatico account for about 10 years, using the same e-mail address. You would think that my address would be on all kinds of spam lists by now. But I only get a couple of spam e-mails a day at most. I consider this acceptable, compared to what some people get. My conclusion is that Sympatico's filters are pretty good, and that this encoding method works quite well. I am also careful about how I give out that e-mail address - which I want to be able to use as my main contact e-mail indefinitely. I'll often use a different address when filling online forms, and I avoid having my e-mail listed on other people's websites, referring them to my website instead, because most websites do not encode their e-mail addresses. I don't even display my e-mail address to friends on Facebook. You can also hide your e-mail address by using a form for people to contact you. However, form spam is very common, and imposes the cat and mouse game on the web designer. "Captcha" gadgets on forms, which make you enter some fuzzy or scrambled letters before you can send your message, may frustrate the user but they work well to reduce form spam. I like the "Recaptcha" system, which Google has seen fit to buy, because it harnesses millions of form-fillers to help digitize books and audio in the public domain. There is also WordPress Recaptcha plugin to add to your blog comment forms. Since the trigger for the e-mail harvesting bots is the @ sign, you can write your e-mail address like this: "contactme - AT - mydomain.com". Do most people understand by now what to do with this? You can't, however, click on the address and go to your e-mail program; you have to copy it out correctly. If you make a "mailto:" e-mail link behind it, the bots will be able to read it - unless you encode it using one of the methods mentioned above. Likewise, some web designers put the e-mail address in an image that bots cannot read. It works pretty well unless you add a link to the image If you do this, be sure to encode the address in the HTML. Beware also of adding your address to alt or title text behind the image. Bots can read that, too, so use "at" instead of the @ sign. You risk making your e-mail address invisible to visually-impaired people using readers, or people browsing with images off. Maybe you don't really need one. Why is a web designer telling you that? Shouldn’t I be trolling for your business? Not at the expense of selling you something you may not need. I love building vacation home websites. It’s almost as much fun as taking a vacation. However, the cost of a custom website, with the quality and attention to detail that I bring to my work, is in the thousands of dollars, not in the hundreds. Furthermore, if your budget is limited, a custom website is no longer the first place that you as a vacation rental owner should spend your advertising money. The top positions in the search engines are typically occupied by large vacation rental sites that work hard to capture and maintain those positions. They have full-time search engine optimizers (“SEOs”) keeping them at the top, while competing with the other large vacation rental sites as well as with you. You should list with one or more of them first. [caption id="attachment_145" align="alignright" width="175" caption="HomeAway.com, one of the big players in the vacation rental world"][/caption] An annual subscription with a large vacation rental site such as HomeAway.com, which has bought some of the other vacation rental sites, costs $300 or more. That price gives you a very extensive listing with excruciating detail about your property and the area, as well as a large number of photos. From the customer’s point of view, these rental sites help them compare apples to apples. There are some other, more economical rental sites that you may discover doing well with search engines. To decide which rental sites to list with, search Google for “vacation rentals your location” (replace your location with the town, region, province or state that you think people would most commonly use). “Vacation rental” has become one of the primary keywords in this business, but you can try some variations as well. For example, there is only one Wolfville in the world, so when I search “vacation rentals Wolfville”, Google gives me (today, that is; your results may vary):
1. A paid ad (on a yellow background) for VacationHomeRentals.com, a smaller listing site that got to the top of the list only by paying for the position.
2. WolfvilleHouse.com – a site I created for a client five years ago and still maintain and do search engine optimization (SEO) for.
3. vrbo.com (VRBO=Vacation Rentals by Owner), now owned by HomeAway.
4. www.cottagesincanada.com – an inexpensive rental site that is obviously performing well in the search engines
5. Google Places listings for rentals in the area, with none actually in Wolfville. Bonus tip: Create a listing for your property with Google Places! (Note to self: do this for WolfvilleHouse.com!)
6. vacationsFRBO.com - another more inexpensive rental site
7. HomeAway.com itself
8. trails.com - an outdoor adventure site that doesn't actually appear to have any relevant results for this area
9. VacationRentalDirect.com – a newer, inexpensive place to list
10. LowdenHouseFarm.com, another of my clients
11. TripAdvisor.com – a social networking travel site that is very useful site for customers with a different business model for owners; check it out. I know that for hotels and B&Bs they charge the owner only when someone books through their site.
12. NileGuide.com – another social networking travel site.
You can set up these listings yourself. The sites ask many detailed questions that only you can answer. I have helped clients who were not comfortable or capable of doing it by themselves create or edit listings over the phone.

For some properties, however, a website can be a good investment.

[caption id="attachment_149" align="alignright" width="253" caption="McCormack House page about Wolfville"][/caption] These vacation rental sites do not allow you to portray the unique character of your property other than through the allowed photos and descriptions. With a good website, you can do much more:
• Describe the house on your own terms, visually and verbally.
• Show as many photos as you want.
• Portray the personality of the place.
• Provide a permanent address for incoming links, which build value to the website and thus to your rental business, for example from:
• Tourism organizations;
• Setting up packages or exchanging links with other local businesses.
• Advertise web address in print media.
• Have a business card for the property with the web address.
• Provide information on the history of an interesting old property.
• Provide more extensive information about the area.
• Anything you can think of!
[caption id="attachment_151" align="alignright" width="175" caption="Vacation by the Sea, rental homes in Nova Scotia"][/caption] If you plan to own and rent out the property for many years, a website could be a very good investment. Even if you do have a website, nowadays you must nonetheless list the property with some vacation rental sites to get the targeted traffic they can provide. You can usually link to your website from your listing, though you should completely fill out the forms on the rental sites anyway. It takes time for a new website to get well positioned with the search engines. [caption id="attachment_141" align="alignright" width="175" caption="Wolfville House vacation rental site"][/caption] I have built websites for a number of vacation rental homes over the last 11 years or so. My clients have all been very happy with my work. Their customers rave about the websites. I have even survived ownership changes! I endeavor to build each site to reflect the colour scheme and personality of the place. Photos predominate. I figure that the people who will like the house should be attracted by the website. The two should match. Once built, the website needs minimal maintenance from year to year. Typically, I have updated dates and prices annually by request of the owner, adding or replacing a few photos from time to time, and done a big overhaul every 5 or 6 years to bring the site more in line with the state of the house and the look of the internet.
